School Project

Issues surrounding menstruation can greatly impact upon the health and quality of life of teenage girls. There is, however, a lack of research addressing menstrual attitudes and awareness among teenagers in the UK.  By obtaining such information, through this school based survey, we may better understand the health and educational needs of adolescents around menstruation.

Researchers suggest that there is a lack of awareness among teenage girls about what constitutes an average, or ‘normal’, menstruation. Without such knowledge, those who experience menstrual health-related problems (such as endometriosis), often do not recognise that there is an issue. In addition, teens may ‘suffer in silence’, feeling too embarrassed to talk about their periods.

It is hoped that findings from this study will act as a guide for future health education priorities, aimed at increasing teens’ knowledge of menstrual health and ill health – especially in the form of endometriosis. Through such education initiatives, teenage girls might acknowledge any issues they encounter and seek help sooner, therefore reducing the impact on their health and quality of life.

Teenage girls, aged 15-19, from a number of collaborating local schools will be invited to be involved in the project. They will be required to complete a short survey, taking approximately 5-10 minutes.
